De La Salle University, through the annual Ka Pepe Diokno
Awards, recognized two outstanding citizens for their moral courage, integrity,
and the love of country—principles that its preeminent alumnus, Filipino
Nationalist and Senator Jose “Ka Pepe” Diokno himself lived by.
Zeneida Quezon AvanceƱa received the 8th Ka Pepe
Diokno Award in recognition of her exemplary dedication and her outstanding
achievements as a human rights activist, principled peacemaker, and an advocate
for women’s rights. Among other things, she established the Concerned Women of the Philippines and
participated in KAAKBAY (Movement for Philippine Sovereignty and Democracy)
during the Martial Law years.
On the other hand, Atty. Francisco Cruz, one of the founding
members of the Free Legal
Assistance Group (FLAG), was conferred the 1st Ka Pepe Diokno Lifetime
Achievement Award in recognition of his exemplary dedication and his
outstanding achievements as a public servant, human rights activist, and a
principled peacemaker.
Atty. Jose Manuel I. Diokno, Dean of the College of Law,
gave his opening remarks at the awarding rites held last February 29, 2012 at the Br.
Andrew Gonzalez Hall.
