DLSU Alumnus is 2012 Young Global Leader awardee

BENEDICT CARANDANG, 30, a DLSU alumni, is one of the youngest recipients of the 2012 Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum. He is one of the four Filipinos selected and joins the ranks of the other 191 honorees from among thousands of nominees across the world. 


Carandang took up a double degree course majoring in Applied Economics-Management of Financial Institutions in DLSU. He is currently in the United Kingdom pursuing an MBA at the University of Westminster under the Chevening Scholarship Program of the UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO).

He was nominated for the Young Global Leaders scheme for his work promoting the creative industries in his home country.

Carandang, at 24, co-founded Tuldok Animation Studios, a social enterprise that aims to promote creative talent in the Philippines through animation. He was also awarded by the British Council’s International Young Creative Entrepreneur for Screen in 2008 and the Most Inspiring Young Entrepreneur by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship in 2009.

The Young Global Leaders are selected by the World Economic Forum each year to recognize the world’s most distinguished leaders under the age of 40.

For Class 2012, the Forum has selected 192 leaders from 59 countries covering various sectors of society, which includes business, civil society, social entrepreneurs, politics and government, arts and culture, & opinion and media. The awardees were chosen by a selection committee, chaired by H.M. Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan. Leaders emerge from East Asia (38), South Asia (19), Europe (46), Middle East and North Africa (15), sub-Saharan Africa (18), North America (37) and Latin America (19).

The 2012 honorees will become part of the broader forum of Young Global Leaders community that currently comprises 713 outstanding individuals. They will convene at an annual summit, slated on April 14-18, 2012 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
