The conference, which marks the 20th anniversary of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development and the 10th anniversary of the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, aims to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenge.
Chiu is the lead author to most key UN documents of the Rio series; namely: 2002 Asia Pacific Industry Paper as input to Rio+10, 2009 Asia Pacific SCP Policy Paper as input to UNCSD18/19, and currently the 2012 SCP Scoping Papers for Philippines and Laos. His assignment to lead the 2012 position paper on sustainable consumption and production was initiated in September 2009 in an expert group meeting held in DLSU, that was a back-to-back event of the first United Nation Industrial Development Organization high level meeting on Manila Declaration covering 45 nations. The SCP Scoping Paper was presented to the cabinet cluster last February 29, 2012.
The Rio event, which has been held every 5-10 years, has been attended by heads of states, presidents and the prime ministers. This year’s conference will focus on two themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.
